How to Network Using FileMaker Pro
Using a Peer-to-Peer network without
FileMaker Pro server!
Each computer MUST have its own copy of FileMaker Pro 5.5 with all the
required plug-ins.
Connect all your machine to the ethernet network in your office and
make sure each machine is functioning properly. You should be using a
network "switch" and not a "hub". A "switch is faster" and costs about
the same as a "hub". All routers for DSL/Cable have built in "switches".
TCP/IP should be the only
network protocal (on either Macintosh or Windows) you are using. Each
computer gets its own unique IP address. Under no circumstances should you be using
DHCP. The host or server computer gets IP address of
"192.168.100.100" and each addtional computer got an address 5 points
higher for the last number (ex. 192.168.100.105, 192.168.100.110, etc.).
On the host machine make sure all PracticeMaker files are in a folder
specifically called "PracticeMaker5". This
make technical support much easier. To start PracticeMaker on the host
machine double click on 1.Office Startup. Then
enter in the highest level password you want to use on THAT computer.
Next do this...
- Log on selecting your name and
entering your password!
- Click the button to open ALL
PracticeMaker files! If requested print
out any outstanding messages or letter requests!
- If you do not plan to use the
machine to work on, and want to prevent others from using your computer
return to Preferences and click the Log Off button.
Now all other computers can log onto the
PracticeMaker network. From each client
computer have the user double click on User Logon.
This opens the software using the lowest level password. The
user can then select the appearance of the
appointment scheduler, if you use it! The
user then clicks on the Log on PracticeMaker network button, logs onto
PracticeMaker and starts the software.
